Monmouthshire LinkAge – A Chain of Rural Memories

Our Intergenerational Project

The Museum invited older residents in Usk to come and meet pupils from Usk Church in Wales Primary School. The children interviewed them about their childhood and other memories about the countryside, so they could write a short biography. Each adult met two children and talked about how different things were now.  The Monmouthshire Youth Services Project ‘The Big Eye’ filmed the event and made a DVD. The school invited everyone to tea and to see a preview of the DVD.

School children interview a local resident. A local resident describes her childhood.

Intergenerational events are designed to encourage interaction and help to increase a feeling of self-worth. It also gave everyone something to look forward to and talking to each other helped them all feel valued.

The second project this autumn was linked to the ‘Big Draw’, a national art event to encourage people to draw. Members of some of the art classes in Usk and other residents joined other children from the school. Some children drew artifacts in the museum, while others, with encouragement and support from the art class students, drew some of the adults who came.
