THE MUSEUM COMES ALIVE WITH FORGOTTEN CRAFTS

The Usk Rural Life Museum has forged an informal agreement with Monmouthshire’s ‘Forgotten Crafts’ group. Their first joint venture was a very successful Crafts Fair at the museum on Saturday 6 May 2006. The Malt Barn and Yard of the museum was given over to 12 displays of country crafts from yesteryear. Amongst these were displays of blacksmithing, dry stone walling, spinning and weaving, stick making, wool craft, pottery, lace-making and wood sculpting, carving and turning. The event attracted around 250 people bringing back memories of past rural life for many adult visitors and yielding new adventures for their children and grandchildren.

The Crafts Day was organised jointly by Ann Mansell who is Education Officer at the museum and Jean Roberts and Suzanne Allen of ‘Forgotten Crafts’. ‘The museum seemed to come alive on Saturday’ said Ann ‘I was thrilled that so many people came and enjoyed the day’
