USK MUSEUM CELEBRATES

The Usk Rural Life Museum celebrated its contribution to the nationwide Museums and Galleries Month for 2008 by featuring work by its staff and volunteers.

Guest of honour Mrs Fisher was present to view the cart renovated by long-serving volunteers Peter Rennie and John Morgan.

The cart originally belonged to Mrs Fisher’s father, Mr George Phillips. Over the last three years the cart has been re-built with a new floor, wheels and shafts and is now resplendent in red and blue livery. Each wheel is built of 98 separate pieces of wood and represents many hours of careful craftsmanship.

In a special event at the museum, guests, friends and volunteers met to view the award winning work of the museum on its LINKage inter-generation programme.

Guests, including Usk Mayor Jill Jeremiah and other councillors, saw images and a DVD of the inter-generation work led by Education Officer Ann Mansell. This involved local children from Usk Church in Wales Primary School interviewing elderly residents and writing up details of their childhood memories of the town.

The guests also had fun making butter together by a traditional technique.
